Quick Answer

Gradient and ombre custom AF1s are Air Force 1s hand-painted with smooth color transitions — one color fading into another across the shoe's upper. Three techniques are available: ombre fade (two colors blending smoothly), two-tone split (a clean color division), and multi-color spectrum (multiple colors across the full upper). Any color combination works. Starting at $299 with a free digital mock-up showing the exact colors and fade before painting begins.

Three Gradient Techniques

The Gradient Options
on an AF1 Canvas

Same visual family, three distinct results — choose the technique that matches the look you want.

Ombre Fade

One color transitioning smoothly into another — the classic gradient. The blend point can be tight (a sharp, dramatic color shift) or wide (a long, gentle transition). Works in any two-color combination from bold contrasts to subtle tonal shifts.

Most popular: Pink to coral, blue to white, black to gold

Two-Tone Split

A clean division between two colors at a specific point on the shoe — not a blend, but a precise line. The split can run toe-to-heel, top-to-bottom, or diagonally across the side panel. Creates a graphic, contemporary look rather than a flowing ombre effect.

Works best: High-contrast combinations where both colors need full presence

Multi-Color Spectrum

Three or more colors fading across the full upper — the rainbow effect, galaxy palette, or sunset spectrum. More complex than a two-color ombre and the most visually striking of the three techniques. Common palettes: sunset (red-orange-yellow), galaxy (purple-blue-teal), and full rainbow.

Best for: Maximum visual impact, statement wear, festival or event shoes

Three Directions the
Gradient Can Run

The same two colors look completely different depending on which direction the fade travels across the shoe.

Toe to Heel →

Color starts at the toe cap and fades toward the heel. Follows the natural horizontal line of the shoe — the most common gradient direction and the easiest to read as intentional.

Bottom to Top ↑

Color starts at the midsole edge and fades upward through the upper. Creates a sunrise or horizon effect — the ocean gradient (white upper fading to blue at the sole) uses this direction.

Swoosh Only ↗

The gradient applied to the swoosh exclusively — fading from one color at the front to another at the rear — while the leather upper stays a single color. A subtle, targeted gradient for a more refined look.

Common Questions

Gradient AF1 FAQs

What is a gradient or ombre custom Air Force 1?
+
An AF1 hand-painted with a smooth color transition — one color fading into another across the upper. Three techniques: ombre fade (two colors blending), two-tone split (clean color division), and multi-color spectrum (three+ colors). Starting at $299 with a free mock-up. See all AF1 styles at custom Air Force 1s.
What's the difference between gradient and ombre on an AF1?
+
Ombre specifically refers to a single color fading from light to dark or one hue to another — gradient is the broader term covering ombre, two-tone splits, and multi-color spectrums. On an AF1, both terms describe the same hand-painted color transition effect.
What color combinations work best?
+
Sunset (pink-orange-yellow), ocean (deep blue to white), galaxy (purple-navy-teal), smoke (black to gray to white), midnight gold (black-purple-gold), and cotton candy (soft pink to soft blue) are the most requested. Any two or more colors that share a value relationship fade cleanly — submit hex codes or describe the palette in the design request.
Which direction can the gradient run?
+
Three options: toe to heel (horizontal — most common), bottom to top (vertical — creates sunrise or ocean horizon effect), and swoosh only (gradient on the swoosh, solid leather upper). Specify the preferred direction in the design request.
How much does a gradient custom AF1 cost?
+
Starting at $299. Simple two-color ombre fades are at the base price. Multi-color spectrums are priced slightly higher. All pricing confirmed in the free mock-up before any commitment. Free USA shipping. See the full pricing guide.
