Six Custom Sneaker Design Style Categories

Not sure where to start? Every custom shoe design falls into one of these six style categories. Pick the one closest to what you're imagining and use it as the language to describe your idea.

💧 Drip

Paint drip effects, fluid color movement, bold gravity-defying design. High visual impact.

→ "Black base with gold drip" or "blue and white fluid design"

🎨 Bold Color

Solid vibrant colors, sharp colorblock, or a single statement color. Clean but striking.

→ "Triple blue, no white showing" or "all red with black accents"

🌸 Floral/Nature

Flowers, botanicals, landscapes — from subtle sprig to full garden coverage.

→ "Pink roses on white" or "cherry blossoms on black"

🎭 Cartoon/Character

A character from any animated property, comic, game, or original cartoon concept.

→ "Goku on the side panel" or "my own cartoon character I'll describe"

✨ Minimal

One color, one element, maximum restraint. The design where less says more.

→ "All white with gold initials only" or "navy with nothing else"

💎 Luxury-Inspired

Designer-inspired patterns, monogram, Burberry check, DG, LV-style elements.

→ "Burberry plaid base" or "LV-inspired monogram design"

What to Include in Your Design Request

You don't need to have a fully formed design to submit a request — that's what the mock-up is for. But the more direction you give, the closer the first mock-up will be to what you're imagining. Here's what to include:

1
Your shoe sizeEssential. AF1s run slightly large — most people size down half a size. See the sizing guide if unsure.
2
Your color directionThe single most important design element. At minimum, your primary color or color combination. Hex codes or Pantone numbers are ideal; "midnight blue with gold" is fine too.
3
Reference imagesAny image that communicates the vibe — doesn't have to be a shoe. A painting, a jersey, a room, a sunset, an album cover. Attach multiple references; more is better.
4
Text elementsYour name, initials, a date, a word or short phrase. Specify exactly how it should appear: "MARCUS in block letters on the heel tab" or "M.W. in gold script on the side panel."
5
What you want to avoidEqually useful. "No text," "no cartoon elements," "keep it clean" — this prevents the mock-up from going in the wrong direction and speeds up the approval process.

How the Design Process Actually Works

The mock-up process is a collaboration, not a one-shot transaction. Here's the real flow:

  1. You submit the request with your idea and references
  2. The artist reviews your brief and may ask a clarifying question if something is ambiguous
  3. The free digital mock-up arrives in 48–72 hours — a complete visual of the shoe design
  4. You review and respond — approve as-is, or request specific changes ("darker blue on the swoosh," "move the name to the side panel")
  5. Revisions are made until the design is exactly right
  6. You approve — this is when production begins and payment is taken
  7. Production: 2–4 weeks → Shipping: 5–7 days → Your shoe arrives

The mock-up revision process is included in the order. There's no limit on the number of revision rounds before approval — the goal is to get the design exactly right before any paint touches leather.

5 Design Mistakes to Avoid

⚠️

Being too vague without references. "Make it look cool" with no color direction or reference image leads to a mock-up that misses the mark. Give the artist something specific to work from — even a rough color direction helps.

⚠️

Requesting photo-realistic rendering. Custom shoes are painted by hand — not printed. Complex photo-realistic scenes (a landscape, a portrait photo) don't translate well. Illustrated characters, bold graphics, and strong color work are the sweet spots for hand-painted shoes.

⚠️

Ignoring the sizing guide for a gift. A wrong size on a custom shoe can't be fixed. Confirm the recipient's exact size before submitting. See the AF1 sizing guide.

⚠️

Ordering too close to an event. Total time from submission to delivery is 5–6 weeks. If you have a birthday, graduation, or wedding coming up, count backwards and make sure you're submitting at least 6–8 weeks out.

⚠️

Not describing placement. "Put my name on the shoe" without specifying where leaves a guess for the artist. Say exactly where: "heel tab in script" or "side panel in block letters below the swoosh." Specific placement descriptions produce more accurate first mock-ups.
